Before You Buy

Research the vendor thoroughly
Check vendor reviews and ratings — look for spread-over-time history, not just the star count (see Red Flags below)
Verify vendor's PGP key
Ensure you have sufficient funds
Use encrypted communication only

These patterns show up repeatedly in failed orders and scam reports. Any one of them is reason to pick a different vendor or walk away.

Batch-seeded reviews. A listing with only glowing 5-star reviews all posted in the same short window — real order history builds gradually over weeks and months, not in a single burst.
Price far below every competitor. The same product listed dramatically cheaper than every other vendor for that item is a too-good-to-be-true signal, not a bargain.
Pressure to pay outside escrow or finalize early. Any vendor asking for direct payment or an early release "for faster shipment" is bypassing the protection you paid for — see the finalize-early warning in the Escrow guide.
No verifiable order history. A seller claiming to be established but showing zero completed orders, or a profile that contradicts the listing's age, has nothing backing the trust signal.
