How This Status Is Checked

Each link is opened in Tor Browser on a fresh circuit, and the result is recorded with the time in UTC. The status labels mean exactly this:

  • OnlineThe market's Authorization (sign-in) page loads through that link.
  • SlowThe page loads, but takes much longer than usual — typically while the market is under a DDoS attack.
  • OfflineTor Browser returns an onion-site error instead of the page.
  • WhenAll three links are checked at least once a day, and again whenever users report a problem through Contact.

This is a manual check, not a live ping: a short outage between two checks may not appear here. If the page says Online and the market still won't open, work through the next section.

Dark Matter Not Loading? Check Your Side First

Run these checks in order — each one rules out a different cause.

  1. Is Tor itself working?

Open the Tor Project's own onion site: 2gzyxa5ihm7nsggfxnu52rck2vv4rvmdlkiu3zzui5du4xyclen53wid.onion. If that doesn't load either, the problem is your Tor connection, not the market.

  2. Is Tor blocked on your network?

If Tor Browser hangs at "Connecting", your provider or country may be blocking it. Turn on a bridge (obfs4, Snowflake or meek) in Tor Browser's connection settings — the Tor Browser setup guide walks through it.

  3. Try the other two links.

The three links run independently. One failing while the others work is normal and you keep the same account on any of them.

  4. Get a new circuit.

Press Ctrl+Shift+L (New Tor circuit for this site) and reload. If that doesn't help, Ctrl+Shift+U (New Identity) restarts the session with fresh circuits — it closes all open tabs.

  5. Update Tor Browser.

When an onion site is under attack, current versions solve a small proof-of-work puzzle and get priority. Outdated clients without that support are pushed to the back of the queue and often time out.

  6. Read the error code.

The code on Tor Browser's error page tells you whether the address, the market or your connection is at fault. What each code means is explained on the Mirrors page.

Why Dark Matter Market Goes Down

  • DDoS attacks. Onion services hide their IP address, so they can't use the IP-based rate limiting regular websites rely on — which makes darknet markets a common DDoS target. Since Tor 0.4.8 (released in August 2023), onion services can enable a proof-of-work defence: under attack, Tor Browser automatically solves a puzzle before connecting, so pages load slower but still load.
  • Maintenance and updates. Planned work usually takes the market offline on all links at once. The market announces it in its own News section.
  • Problems with the Tor network. Sometimes the whole network is degraded, not one site. In the second half of 2022 a sustained attack on the Tor network made many onion sites slow or unreachable for months.
  • A retired link. When an address is replaced, the old one stops answering and Tor Browser shows "Onionsite Not Found". The current addresses are always on Mirrors.

Downtime or Exit Scam? How to Tell

Every long outage brings rumours of an exit scam — operators shutting a market down and keeping users' funds. The two look different in practice:

Sign Ordinary downtime Exit-scam pattern
Access All links fail together, then come back on the same addresses. The site stays up, but withdrawals are "temporarily disabled" while deposits still work.
Communication Staff explain the outage in the market's News or on its Dread community. Silence, or the same vague "maintenance" notice for days.
Vendors Orders resume where they stopped. Sudden pressure to finalize early, or vendors leaving en masse.
Links Nothing changes, or a new link appears on Mirrors. "New links" circulate only in unofficial posts.

History shows why the withdrawal signal matters most. Wall Street Market was put into "maintenance mode" with withdrawals blocked in April 2019, weeks before German police took it down. Empire Market went offline in August 2020 during a period of DDoS attacks and never returned; users' losses were estimated at around $30 million.

The protection is the same in both cases: keep on your market balance only what the current order needs, and withdraw the rest to a wallet you control.

Setting up that wallet is covered in the Dark Matter wallet guide and the Monero guide.

Every outage confirmed by a manual check is added here with its duration and affected links.

Dark Matter Status FAQ

Is Dark Matter Market down right now?

As of the last check shown at the top of this page, all three links are online. If you can't connect, run the checklist above — most failures at this point are on the Tor side.

Why is Dark Matter so slow?

Usually because the market is under a DDoS attack and Tor Browser is solving proof-of-work puzzles to get through, or because your current circuit is congested. Try another link or press Ctrl+Shift+L for a new circuit.

Is my balance safe while the market is offline?

Your balance is stored on the market's servers, so downtime alone doesn't touch it. The real risk is an exit scam, which is why the balance you leave on the market should be small.

All links have been down for hours. What should I do?

Wait, and check this page and the RSS feed. Don't search for "new links" on forums or Telegram: long outages are exactly when phishing links spread. A genuine new link appears on Mirrors.

Where does Dark Matter announce maintenance?

In the News section inside the market, which has separate Dark Matter, Vendors and Discussions tabs, and on its Dread community, linked from the market's footer.

Does "Online" mean the link is safe to use?

It means the link is reachable. Whether a link is genuine depends only on its address — check it against Mirrors or with the Link Checker.
