Tor Browser Installation Guide

Introduction to Tor Browser

Tor Browser is the essential tool for accessing Dark Matter Market and other .onion sites on the dark web. This guide will walk you through downloading, installing, and configuring Tor Browser for maximum security.

Step 1: Download Tor Browser

  1. Visit the official Tor Project website: https://www.torproject.org
  2. Navigate to the Downloads section
  3. Select your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux)
  4. Click the download button for your system
  5. Important: Never download Tor from unofficial sources

Warning: Only download Tor Browser from torproject.org to avoid malware and compromised versions.

Step 2: Install Tor Browser

Windows Installation

  1. Run the downloaded .exe installer
  2. Choose your installation language
  3. Select the installation directory (default is recommended)
  4. Wait for extraction to complete
  5. Choose whether to create desktop shortcuts

macOS Installation

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file
  2. Drag Tor Browser to your Applications folder
  3. If prompted about unidentified developer, right-click and select "Open"

Linux Installation

  1. Extract the downloaded .tar.xz archive
  2. Navigate to the extracted folder
  3. Run ./start-tor-browser.desktop

Step 3: Configure Security Settings

After launching Tor Browser, configure it for maximum security:

  1. Click the shield icon in the toolbar
  2. Select "Safest" security level
  3. This disables JavaScript and some features, but provides maximum protection

Tip: The "Safest" setting is recommended for accessing Dark Matter Market.

Using Bridges if Tor Is Blocked

If your network or country blocks direct connections to the Tor network, use a bridge — a relay that isn't publicly listed, so it's harder to block.

  1. Open Tor Browser and click "Configure Connection" on the initial screen (or go to Settings → Connection if already connected)
  2. Enable "Use a bridge"
  3. Choose one of the built-in pluggable transports: obfs4 (default, works in most cases), meek-azure (disguises traffic as Microsoft Azure HTTPS, useful where obfs4 itself is blocked), or Snowflake (routes through volunteer WebRTC proxies)
  4. Click Connect

Tip: If none of the built-in transports connect, request a bridge address directly from bridges.torproject.org or by emailing [email protected] from a Gmail or Riseup address.

Step 4: Access Dark Matter Market

  1. Open Tor Browser
  2. Wait for connection to the Tor network (usually 10-30 seconds)
  3. Copy a verified Dark Matter onion link from our Mirrors page
  4. Paste the .onion link into the address bar
  5. Press Enter and wait for the page to load
  6. Verify you're on the official Dark Matter Market site

Security Best Practices

  • Never maximize Tor Browser window (reduces fingerprinting)
  • Don't install additional extensions
  • Never enable JavaScript on untrusted sites
  • Use a VPN before connecting to Tor for additional privacy
  • Consider using Tails OS for maximum security
  • Always verify PGP signatures on important communications
