Choosing an Authenticator App
Use any standard TOTP app that stores secrets locally on your device. On Android, Aegis Authenticator is a solid open-source choice; on iOS, look for a reputable TOTP app with local-only storage.
Prefer these over Google Authenticator or Duo: both tie to a personal Google or corporate account and can sync your TOTP secrets to the cloud under your real identity ā the opposite of what you want on a darknet account.
If You Lose Your Authenticator
Backup codes are your only recovery path if the phone is lost, wiped, or the app is uninstalled. Each code is normally single-use ā once entered, that code cannot be used again.
Store backup codes offline with the same discipline as your account recovery phrase ā see How to Register for that concept. A paper copy in a secure location beats any digital copy tied to a cloud account.
A screenshot of backup codes saved to Google Photos, iCloud, or any other cloud photo backup exposes them to the same account that links to your real identity. Write them down or store them in an encrypted offline file instead.
